Civil War Tour

For the student of the American Civil War (1861-1865), learning about the major battles fought is part of the study of America’s bloodiest war. Students will begin to ascertain the scale of this devastating war and understand its significance by taking a tour of major battlefield sites.

For the purpose of transportation to and from chosen battlefields and the hotel, the Civil War Tour has been divided into North and South. For both North and South, student tour groups may stay at a hotel in Northern Virginia, with easy access to Washington D.C. For the Southern Tour, a bus trip to Charleston is also recommended.

A History of Slavery and Abolition Movement

It is well known that North and South were fiercely divided over the issue of slavery. The Southern plantation owners grew tobacco and cotton, two of the cash crops of that time. They were dependent upon slave labor for higher profits. The North was more geographically consolidated and housed industries and important transportation hubs. The North became a sanctuary for runaway slaves and their stories were made public. Places like Philadelphia, New York City and Boston offered the ideal forum for abolitionists - sponsored by churches and public figures.

Civil War Erupts in the United States of America

Civil War erupted on April 12, 1861 when Charleston’s harbor was defended by Confederate troops. The Civil War lasted until May 9, 1865, when General Robert E. Lee formally surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, VA. An estimated 620,000 soldiers perished and many more were wounded. Tragically, the Civil War divided the country not only across state lines that represented the Union or Confederacy, but within families, where brother would fight brother. The Civil War was fought mostly in the South, with Gettysburg and Antietam as exceptions. The aforementioned battlefields are examples of General Robert E. Lee’s daring incursions into Union territories.

Student Tour of Washington D.C. & Civil War Battlefields in VA

On this tour, students will learn about the Battle of Bull Run in Manassas, Virginia and other battlefields in Fredericksburg, Richmond and Petersburg. A student trip to Washington D.C. can include major highlights such as the White House and the Capitol Building and also encompass Civil War battle sites throughout Virginia.
